UAE declares a three-day mourning period for HM Queen Elizabeth

Flags in the UAE and its embassies will be flown at half-mast. 

As the UAE mourns the death of HM Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth, the Emirates state news agency has declared a three-day mourning period. The Queen died on 8 September at the age of 96 in Balmoral Castle, Scotland. Following the news, leaders from the UAE have shared their tributes and condolences. 

In a statement, the Presidential Court said that the mourning period will end on 12 September. The Court also expressed its sincere condolences to King Charles III. During the UAE’s mourning period, flags in the Emirates and at UAE embassies across the world will be flown at half-mast. 

UAE leaders have joined world leaders in honouring the British monarch. H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai stated: “We join the world in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, a global icon who represented the finest qualities of her nation and people. Her incredible lifetime of service and duty to the United Kingdom is unparalleled in our modern world.”

UAE President H.H Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan added: “I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and the people of the UK. Her Majesty was a close friend of the UAE and a beloved and respected leader whose long reign was characterised by dignity, compassion and a tireless commitment to serving her country.”

The Queen is a much loved and respected figure in the United Kingdom and across the globe. The Queen is known for her devotion to a life of service and her sense of duty. As the longest-serving monarch in British history, she has reigned for 70 years.

The Queen is succeeded by her son Charles, who will be known as King Charles III.
