Partner Content: Blending age-old techniques with modern design, Irthi preserves the UAE’s cultural heritage.
In a world increasingly dominated by mass production, the artistry of traditional crafts can sometimes feel like an echo of the past. But in Sharjah, a quiet revolution has been taking place over the last decade that not only preserves the UAE’s cultural heritage but also elevates the women behind it.
Since its founding in 2015 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council has been dedicated to empowering craftswomen across the UAE and beyond. By providing artisans with the skills, resources, and international exposure they need, Irthi has transformed traditional Emirati crafts from local curiosities into globally recognised works of art.

Over ten years, Irthi has grown from a Sharjah-focused initiative to a network spanning 13 countries and more than 640 artisans. It has helped organise international exhibitions and formed strategic collaborations with luxury brands like Bulgari and Cartier. At its core lies a commitment to authenticity, showcasing Emirati techniques such as Talli and Safafah while blending them with contemporary design and cross-cultural influences.
At Irthi, innovation meets tradition. From apps like Hiraf, you can digitally learn and practice traditional braiding techniques. You can also find out more about 3D printing creations that were once purely handcrafted. Using these techniques, the council has made heritage crafts accessible and appealing to the younger audiences.

The impact extends beyond basic learning. For many craftswomen, Irthi has opened doors to new livelihoods, global recognition, and opportunities to collaborate with international designers. Through this, Irthi is not just preserving Emirati heritage but also presenting it to the next generation with pride.
Irthi continues to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. By championing the talent and creativity of craftswomen, it ensures that centuries-old techniques are not only preserved but also celebrated on the world stage, while also inspiring the future.
