The event brings together cinema, conversations and connections.

Cinema Akil is presenting BLACKBIRD. Running from 26 to 28 September, the event takes place in Alserkal Avenue. The concept draws inspiration from Nina Simone’s song of the same name, and brings together cinema, conversation and connection.

Nina Simone’s Blackbird has been reinterpreted over the years by a range of performers, including Beyoncé, Corinne Bailey Rae and The Beatles. The song talks about the struggles of Black women during the Civil Rights era, and became an anthem for Black Americans.

BLACKBIRD will feature screenings of powerful films that explore the Black experience, alongside talks from a range of speakers. On 26 and 28 September, there will be screenings of Malcolm X. Directed by Spike Lee, the film explores the life of the civil rights leader and stars Denzel Washington. These screenings will include talks from Shannon Ayers Holden and author George Alexander.

On 27 September, Akeelah and the Bee will be shown. The film tells the story of a young girl from a troubled home who is on the verge of giving up school, only to discover her talent for spelling. She goes on to compete in a national spelling bee. The film stars Keke Palmer in a breakout role.

On 27 September, there will be a screening of Memories of Love Returned. Directed by Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, this deeply personal documentary spans 22 years and two continents. The screening will be followed by a video call Q&A with the director.
