A new cultural landmark is taking shape on Dubai Creek.

The Dubai Museum of Art, known as DUMA, has been announced as the city’s next headline attraction. Designed by celebrated Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the museum will stand on the banks of Dubai Creek and appear to float on the water. Tadao Ando, renowned for minimalist masterpieces such as the Church of Light in Osaka and the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, brings his signature restraint to a building that is poised to become both an architectural statement and a cultural hub.

Early details point to a considered visitor journey. Two expansive gallery floors will anchor the museum’s core, complemented by a VIP lounge and a destination restaurant accessed via a waterfront promenade. The curatorial focus will highlight contemporary work from Dubai’s thriving creative community, giving space to established names and rising talent.

Programming will extend beyond exhibitions. Plans include artist talks, panel discussions, educational workshops, and art fairs, supported by purpose-built event spaces to create a year-round calendar. The aim is to encourage learning, dialogue and innovation across the emirate’s arts ecosystem. A library, study rooms and training initiatives are also on the cards to nurture the next generation of cultural leaders.

Ando’s scheme draws on the sea, the sky and the pearl, long-standing symbols of Dubai’s heritage. A curved outer shell will wrap a circular exhibition void to suggest unity and discovery, while a cylindrical opening at the heart of the structure will channel natural light into the galleries, evoking the lustre of a pearl. The design language leans into Ando’s refined use of light, shadow and proportion, and his trademark synergy between architecture and the surrounding environment.

The museum aligns with Dubai’s ambition to cement its place as a global capital of the creative economy and to expand its arts and culture scene. As His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum stated: “The Dubai Museum of Art will be a new beacon for the city, enhancing its arts scene and further strengthening its global cultural status. Dubai has become a destination of choice for creatives from around the world, home to communities and industries working together to accelerate the growth of the creative economy. This new cultural landmark advances our strategic goal to position Dubai as a global hub for creativity and culture, and cements its place on the modern art map.”

Further information, including timelines and opening details, will be revealed in due course. For now, DUMA signals a bold new chapter for art on the Creek.
