FACT Review: Take a bite out of The Big Apple at 42 Midtown

This new restaurant at Zabeel House The Greens brings New York charm to Dubai.

If you’re craving a taste of New York in the heart of Dubai, look no further than the newly opened 42 Midtown. This modern hotspot promises to transport you straight to The Big Apple with its sleek, sophisticated ambience and a menu inspired by the flavours of Manhattan.

Stepping into 42 Midtown, the first thing that catches your eye is its decor. Drawing inspiration from the Art Deco era, the restaurant features a marble bar, semi-circular booths, and a year-round terrace. The colour palette, ranging from light to dark browns, is complemented by an abundance of plants, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The woodfire oven at the heart of the venue not only adds to the aesthetic but also promises some delectable dishes.

Seating options range from simple wooden tables to plush booths, offering a variety of dining experiences. The outdoor terrace, divided into shaded and open sections, caters to those seeking an outdoorsy environment. For us, it was the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch.

Head Chef Fabrizio Vermiglio is behind the carefully crafted menu, which blends New York flavours with soulful European flair. For starters, we dived into the classic NYC Mac and Cheese and a Burrata Salad. The NYC Mac and Cheese, featuring Parmesan fondue and cheddar cheese, was a textbook example of the dish — cheesy, crunchy, and utterly satisfying. The Burrata Salad, adorned with tomatoes, avocado, and pickled onions, presented a delightful and colourful harmony of flavours. The presentation, resembling a homegrown garden, added a touch of whimsy to the dining experience.

Moving on to the main courses, the Spaghetti Meatballs were a disappointment. Unfortunately, the beef meatballs were tough, the spaghetti undercooked, and the sauce lacked seasoning. It was an unexpected letdown for a dish that is typically simple yet comforting.

On the brighter side, the Pan-Seared Salmon was good, though it could have benefited from more pronounced flavours. The citrus sauce, while a wonderful addition, could have been utilised more effectively to elevate the overall taste.

Saving the best for last, the desserts at 42 Midtown were exceptional. While the Tiramisu held its ground, the Cheesecake stole the show with its outstanding flavour and texture. The commendable presentation across all of the dishes left no room for error.

42 Midtown

42 Midtown offers a new al fresco dining experience for Dubai diners, with appetisers emerging as the highlight. While the main courses may not live up to expectations, the desserts and impeccable presentation redeem the overall experience. It might not be your go-to spot for a weekend dinner, but for business lunches, 42 Midtown could become a popular choice. And let’s not forget that outdoor terrace — an inviting haven once the weather takes a turn for the better. We recommend giving it a shot.
