The London-born favourite makes its first international move with a compact Dubai restaurant built around the theatre of the counter.
DIFC is not short of restaurants with international reputations, but it’s time to say hola to the Spanish restaurant, Barrafina Dubai. There is no Instagrammable moment, no skyline spectacle and no attempt to rework Spanish food into something different for Dubai. Instead, the London-born tapas bar has brought its familiar formula of counter seating, close-quarters cooking, and premium produce to Gate Village.
Barrafina’s story began in London, where it helped make counter dining feel desirable and quietly glamorous. Its first site opened on Frith Street in Soho before the brand exploded across the capital, building a reputation around modern Spanish tapas and the energy of chefs working within arm’s reach of their guests. Its culinary status was cemented when Barrafina became the first no-reservations restaurant to be awarded a MICHELIN Star.
Service and Setting
Dubai marks Barrafina’s first international opening, and the DIFC postcode boasts the brand’s familiar footprint and relaxed rhythm. With just 55 seats, it is compact by Gate Village standards. Reservations are accepted in the dining room, while the counter remains walk-in only, preserving the spirit of the original.
The counter is where Barrafina experience excels. Chefs chop, plate, pour and chat in the open kitchen, creating interactivity and a sense of low-key theatre. The room itself is intimate and unfussy, with red accents running through arched alcoves, travertine-style walls, crimson leather barstools and marble-topped tables.
Service is brisk, warm and well-versed in the menu. There is no hard sell, which is refreshing. Instead, dishes arrive quickly, and the team understands that tapas should move with momentum. Barrafina is built for sharing, and the pacing allows the meal to feel generous without becoming overwhelming.

Terrific Tapas
Sharing is caring at this terrific tapas restaurant and the menu succeeds because it resists the urge to overcomplicate. A White Anchovy Tostada (AED 75) opens the meal with brightness and precision, the anchovy bringing salinity and lift without overpowering the crisp bread. Padron Peppers (AED 55) are beautifully blistered, lightly salted, and marvellously moreish.
The Wagyu Cecina (AED 125) is one of the more compelling plates on the table. In London, Barrafina’s Spanish identity has long included pork, but Dubai’s substitutions are handled with intelligence rather than compromise. The cecina is savoury and supple, proving that adaptation need not dilute a concept.
The Classic Tortilla (AED 65) is a signature, and Barrafina’s version lands with the right amount of wobble. Gloriously gooey at the centre, it is rich without being heavy and brings the comfort that only eggs, potatoes, and restraint can provide. Mushrooms and Egg Yolk (AED 65) follows a similar path, mixed at the table into an earthy emulsification that feels autumnal, even in Dubai’s summer climate.

Proteins are handled with confidence. Tuna Belly Crudo (AED 185) is silky, swimming in sauce and crowned with caviar. The Tapa de Entrecote (AED 195) is cooked to a perfect pink medium; the beef needs no sauce, garnish or unnecessary flourish. The meat stands on its own, and the kitchen is sensible enough to let it. In DIFC, where dining can quickly become performative and expensive, there is value in a restaurant that delivers quality without making a spectacle of the bill.
Desserts continue the Spanish thread with a sense of fun. Frozen Lemon (AED 35), served inside the fruit, is terrifically tart and works as a palate cleanser. Basque Cheesecake (AED 60) is smooth, creamy and unafraid to lean into the flavour of Idiazabal cheese, giving it more character than the softer, sweeter versions found across the city. Chocolate Mousse (AED 45), finished with a generous glug of olive oil, is an indulgent textural triumph and an instant FACT favourite.

The Verdict
Barrafina Dubai follows the familiar format of its London siblings, and that is largely its strength. It does not arrive trying to reinvent tapas for the region. Instead, it offers counter dining with a pulse and a relaxed room that feels genuinely enjoyable to sit in.
Barrafina succeeds in its intimacy and its price point. In a neighbourhood built on big names and bigger bills, Barrafina may be one of DIFC’s most quietly satisfying new arrivals. Book the dining room if you must, but the counter is where the restaurant comes alive.
