The Business Bay address boasts a cinema, karaoke and rooftop pool.
Mama Shelter Dubai is shaking up the hospitality scene in the UAE. In a city famed for its world-class hotels, ranging from luxury landmarks to a self-proclaimed seven-star property, the hip and happening hotel offers something completely different. Located in Business Bay, Mama Shelter Dubai is a breath of oh-so-cool air, packed with personality, creativity and a sense of community.
The Mama Shelter brand was launched in 2008 in Paris, France, by the Trigano family. Now, it can be found in Belgrade, London and Rio de Janeiro. Mama Shelter Dubai has been created in partnership with Accor and Ennismore, the same people who bought you Dubai’s trendiest hotels, including 25hours Hotel One Central to SLS Dubai Hotels and Residences.

Mama Shelter Dubai is housed in a new Franklin Azzi Architecture building and knows how to make an entrance. The exterior boasts a fun, funky, neon-lit, graffiti-covered ceiling mural. Upon arrival, the hotel bursts with colour and texture — from vibrant yellow walls to black-and-white furniture that somehow works together in its mismatched charm.
All of the staff have name badges and greet you with a smile. There’s no ma’am or sir. Instead, it’s like you’ve just popped over to your friend’s place, and they want you to kick off your shoes – in this case, take your suitcase – and feel at home.
Rooms and suites
Mama Shelter Dubai has 197 rooms in three sizes: Medium, XL and the XXL Mama Crazy Suite. The warm welcome continued in the room, which is packed with personality. There are messages on the mirrors with my name, Looney Tunes masks by the bed, and a cookie and fruit plate on the table. In Dubai, we are used to sprawling square feet, but these rooms felt like they are in London, Paris or on a first-class flight.
FACT checked into the Medium, which clocked in at a mere 26 square metres. While the room had all the essentials, including a comfortable king-sized bed, it was cosy and compact. Even though I was by myself with a carry-on and checked suitcase to keep me company, the room was on the tighter side.
In the bathroom, the doors can be moved to change the space, and make the bedroom or bathroom feel bigger. In the living area, the bed was perfectly positioned to enjoy the Burj Khalifa views (as well as the construction). We enjoyed the free movies, skin-into-satin sheets and sweet dreams.

Restaurants and bars
While Mama Shelter Dubai offers a range of eating and drinking options, the common thread is the good vibes. At the heart of the hotel is the all-day dining option, Mama Restaurant. Breakfast is on the smaller side, while lunch and dinner are generously good. The grills and steaks range from a New York Strip to superb seafood platters. The DJ set the sounds with old-school R&B, from Aaliyah to Alicia Keys, and Nedjim Mahtallah wowed with his vocals.
Mama Trattoria showcases Italian cuisine and is great for groups. The highlights included the Mobster Pizza with pepperoni and the rustic Lasagna with Wagyu ragu. Mama Skypool is a relaxed rooftop for bites and beverages, while Mama’s Bar is a speakeasy serving cocktails well into the night.

Facilities
Mama Shelter Dubai is home to the expected spa and gym, which are on the simpler side. Mama Shelter Dubai by L’ODAÏTÈS showcases the French brand. The company was created by three sisters, who pay homage to their grandmother. The treatments span facials to massages, and use techniques from Japan to the Mediterranean. Plus, the gym is a dark den and open for 24 hours.
Where the hotel excels is on the quirkier side, from karaoke nights to cinema screenings – or what they like to call CineMama. Located on the terrace, it projects classic movies and is free for guests.

Verdict
Throughout our stay, all of the staff seemed genuinely happy to help, and I went away remembering their names. If a drink wasn’t on the menu, a version was magically made – twice. Mama Shelter Dubai is the ultimate Gen Z escape, but you don’t have to be young to enjoy it. Whether you’re there to party or let out your inner child, Mama is ready to take care of you, after all.
