A foodie film experience is coming to a screen near you

Give your popcorn an upgrade with Movie Eats.

In Dubai, food in the cinema is more than just popcorn. To prove the point, Movie Eats is opening a culinary cinematic experience. If that sounds like a tasty night out, here’s how to dig into the dishes that you see onscreen.

Movie Eats in Dubai describes itself as the first-of-its-kind experience in the UAE. The tagline states: “Where movie going meets mouthwatering moments”. The date and location have not yet been confirmed, but it has certainly got our stomachs rumbling.

The concept sounds similar to London’s Taste Film, where diners are not just watching the scenes unfold on the screen; but are right there with the characters, sharing in their emotions and their meals. Just imagine eating Macaulay Culkin’s ice cream tower from Home Alone, for real though.

The Movie Eats in Dubai programme has not yet been revealed, but there are plenty of foodie film moments. Classic cinema scenes include Woody Allen and Diane Keaton boiling lobsters in Annie Hall, Uma Thurman sipping on a milkshake in Pulp Fiction, and Kirsten Dunst lapping up Laduree desserts in Marie Antoinette.

If you’re after films dedicated to food, here’s what might keep you satisfied. Julie and Julia shares the story of the American chef and writer Julia Child, and was directed by Nora Ephron and starred Meryl Streep. The 1971 Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory and 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory include everything from a golden ticket in a chocolate bar to fizzy lifting drinks. Director Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas is filled with Italian food, and there is even a scene where his own mother is seen cooking.

If you’re looking for the best cinemas in Dubai, check out our round-up of screens that have everything from blankets to butlers. Plus, there are fantastic food experiences, which include food from Guy Fiera’s American Kitchen at Jebel Ali Recreation Club to food delivered directly to your seat at Reel Cinema’s Platinum Suites.

Tickets for Movie Eats in Dubai have not yet been announced. If the concept is anything to go by, it will be like trying to get a reservation at Dorsia – the restaurant Bret Easton Ellis is desperate to visit in American Psycho.

Let them eat cinema.
