Now, the UAE is looking closer to home with Khun, a new wellness retreat in Fujairah exploring how centuries of Arab and Islamic approaches to health, nature and restoration could be reimagined for modern wellbeing.
Khun is taking a quieter, more immersive approach to wellness. Rather than creating another resort centred on treatment menus, fitness classes and scheduled activities, its 48-hour experience is designed around architecture, landscape, solitude and the natural rhythm of the day, with the environment itself becoming part of the restorative process.
The choice of Fujairah is central to the concept. Away from the dense urban environments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the emirate offers mountains, coastline and quieter natural surroundings. But what sets Khun apart is the cultural thinking behind the concept. The brand draws on historic Arab and Islamic approaches to health, environment and human wellbeing, bringing ideas that predate the modern wellness industry into a contemporary setting.
Centuries ago, bimaristans, or Islamic hospitals, incorporated gardens, water, light, ventilation, architecture and daily routines into environments designed around care and recovery. Khun also references thinkers including Ibn Sina, Al Razi and Al Ghazali, whose work explored health, balance, environment and human flourishing.
Khun’s architect-designed sanctuaries are planned for remote natural settings, with minimal impact on their surroundings. Elements including light, silence, thermal contrast, food and architecture are carefully considered to create an environment conducive to rest and recovery.
Guests will not follow prescribed itineraries or timetables. Instead, the experience encourages them to slow down and disconnect, whether that means walking through the landscape, sitting in silence, spending time alone or simply observing changes in light throughout the day. The philosophy is less about giving guests a list of things to do and more about creating the conditions in which they can properly switch off.
Khun’s first sanctuary in Fujairah is expected to welcome guests in Q4 2026, with further details on the exact location and launch plans still to come.
