FACT Chats: Steve Harvey talks karak tea and Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene

Step into the capital through the lens of this global entertainer.

Steve Harvey wears many hats. As a multifaceted entertainer, he transitions between roles as a comedian, actor, television host, and author. This time around, he’s putting on his chef’s hat and heading to Abu Dhabi for the first-ever Open Fire Food Festival. This sizzling event — hosted by Harvey himself — promises to set the capital’s food scene ablaze with open-flame cooking. Taking place from 24 to 25 February at Yas Marina Circuit, the Open Fire Food Festival will see several celebrity chefs firing up the grill to bring you a taste of their smoky flavours.

Born in Welch, West Virginia, Harvey rose from humble beginnings to become a powerhouse in the entertainment industry. He honed his craft through stand-up comedy before transitioning to television, where he gained widespread recognition as the host of Family Feud. His book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man was adapted into the hit movie Think Like a Man, further solidifying his status as a cultural icon. With a lightning-fast wit and an uncanny ability to cut through the noise, Harvey’s persona is encapsulated in his viral catchphrase: “You can’t be serious.” FACT magazine sits down with the man to delve into the depths of his wit, wisdom, and whirlwind of experiences in Abu Dhabi.

Reflecting on what drew him to the UAE, Harvey shares how the country has become his second home. For the man whose life revolves around the 24/7 entertainment industry, the lure of this peaceful country was magnetic. “The UAE is a country of peace, and I wanted my family to be in that environment. I love how peaceful Abu Dhabi is. There’s something for all ages and interests.”

Steve is keen to change stereotypes about the Middle East. “Coming from the United States, we’re fed all types of propaganda on what this side of the world is like. I’d have to say that the UAE has introduced me to so many different cultures and completely opened my eyes to learning as much as I can,” he confesses.

Gearing up to host the Open Fire Food Festival, Harvey chose Abu Dhabi as the ideal setting. Explaining his decision, he remarked, “The UAE was the perfect place because where else will you find over 200 nationalities all living in harmony? That’s unheard of where I’m from. And I chose Abu Dhabi specifically because that’s one of the most family-oriented places in the UAE. To create a space where everyone can share their culture and also get a taste of someone else’s is the ultimate learning experience.”

In the culinary realm, Steve Harvey defers to his wife when it comes to naming favourites. “She’s introduced me to so many different foods while we’re here,” he commented. “I do love that karak tea!”

Much like the UAE, Saudi Arabia is also quickly garnering the attention of celebrities from all over the world and closing the conversation, Steve Harvey shares his thoughts on the Kingdom. “I’ve met some good people from Saudi Arabia but haven’t had the chance to visit yet.”

As the world eagerly awaits the next chapter in Steve Harvey’s adventures, one thing remains evident: his unwavering affection for the Middle East. Whether he’s donning the chef’s hat to ignite the culinary scene in Abu Dhabi with the Open Fire Food Festival or challenging stereotypes about the region, Harvey’s journey reflects a profound appreciation for the cultural tapestry and warmth of the UAE. With each role he embraces, from comedian to host to cultural ambassador, Harvey continues to leave an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the hearts of those he encounters along the way.
