Saudi Arabia amends citizenship for foreign nationals

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz can now grant citizenship.

Saudi Arabia has announced that it is extending citizenship to foreign nationals. Following the announcement, His Royal Highness Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz will be able to grant citizenship to certain individuals.

A royal decree was issued to approve the amended Article Eight of the Saudi Nationality Law. The amendment was announced on the official Mecca Province Twitter account and published in the official newspaper, Umm Al Qura.

The decree became law on March 13, according to a post by the Makkah Al Mukarramah. The tweet stated: “Saudi Arabian nationality is granted by order of the Prime Minister based on the proposal of the Minister of Interior.”

The decision was published in Umm Al Qura, which added: “After reviewing Royal Decree No (M / 88) dated 6/11/1444 AH, Article Eight of the Saudi Nationality Law will be amended to ‘Saudi nationality may be granted by order of the Prime Minister based on a proposal from the Minister of Interior”. 

The new decision amends Article Eight of Saudi Nationality Law. Article 28 of the Executive Regulations of the Saudi Nationality Law, which required the Minister of Interior to grant nationality in accordance with Article Eight of the Law, has been removed. 

The decision comes into place from the date of publication in Umm Al Qura.
