Dubai’s latest dining attraction weighs 400 pounds

Partner Content: A legit sumo wrestler is part of the line-up of performers at TABŪ.

They sport topknots, consume 20,000 calories daily, and are hailed as heroes across Japan. They’re sumo wrestlers, and one has taken up residence as a performer at TABŪ in the heart of Downtown Dubai. The restaurant, known for its modern Japanese cuisine and chic ambience, is elevating its dining experience by bringing Saita over to entertain guests throughout dinner. And Saita is no ordinary wrestler, either — he is a former champion in Japan’s sumo wrestling world and has performed all over the world.

TABŪ

For the uninitiated, sumo wrestlers are an intriguing and unique sight to behold. These massive athletes, who are often referred to as “rikishi”, weigh in at a staggering average of 180kg and stand at around 1.8m tall. While most people might assume that their size is simply a result of overeating and lack of exercise, the reality is that sumo wrestlers undergo a rigorous training regimen to prepare for their matches. As for one of the most fascinating aspects of sumo wrestling? The traditional garb worn by the wrestlers during competitions. Known as a mawashi, this loincloth-like garment is made of thick cotton and can weigh up to 7kg. Each wrestler must wrap it around his waist and tie it in a knot at the back, making sure that it’s tight enough to stay in place during the intense physical activity that follows. And, yes, Saita wears a traditional mawashi for TABŪ’s acts.

TABŪ

“TABŪ Restaurant is always looking for new ways to enhance our guests’ dining experience, and having a real sumo wrestler perform is just one of the many ways we are doing that,” said David Lescarret, managing partner at Infini Concepts, the agency that created and manages TABŪ. “Our customers are in for a treat as they watch a true athlete showcase his skills in a unique and futuristic way.”

Saita will perform a variety of moves and techniques that have been passed down through generations of sumo wrestlers. On Wednesdays, guest can witness TABŪ’s take on a sake ceremony at Yakuza Affair. Saita will break the sake barrel and the parade of performers will serve sake to all guests while enjoying a high-vibe evening, complete with a DJ and drums. He will also be available to take photos with guests — are you camera-ready?
